While in exile I have been corresponding with my niece from NYC who lives close enough to the former site of the WTC to have her aparment covered in dust. Many interesting stories here is one excerpt:

We went out to *****'s parents in Long Island on
Friday afternoon. It was really good to get away from
everything for a while. It has been interesting and
frustrating to see people's reactions. Because I
watched everything happen and because we were part of
the frozen zone, every day was stressful. I can't
imagine what it must be like for people who live
closer than us or were there. One of the women in my
office worked down in the WTC before she joined our
company. More than 50 people are still missing from
her old company. For others who live farther uptown
or out in the suburbs, they started back to a normal
life much more quickly. One of our friends even came
down to the city just to try to seem for himself what
its like here. For ***** and I, that was completely
incomprehensible. All we wanted to do was be away
from it. There are so many stages when grieving after
a tragedy like this and its hard to see others moving
through the steps faster when I can't even begin to
imagine going back to "normal" life.

One of the worst things is watching the racism that is
springing up all over. People no longer seem to be
even trying to guard their speech. I have had quite a
few people say very racist things to me when telling
me their stories and opinions over the weekend. I
couldn't think of anything to say to these people. I
am not even sure what to say now except to encourage
everyone to remember that this was done by a terrorist
group and not by all Muslims or Arabs. Hating blindly
will not help us overcome any tragedy and certainly
won't make us a united country.
