Wait, wait.....

Even though I'm a cool guy who has a cool post, I'm no expert. My "research" was a Dateline or a Frontline article the details of which I obviously did not recall correctly.

But the gist was right, no?

The big SUVs are not primarily used in ranches, construction sites, etc., but are used by soccer moms who drive by themselves to get their nails done. I'm exaggerating deliberately here but, still, the market segment that they target was once occupied by station wagons. The argument is that they should be treated as autos because they are the functional equivalents, regardless of the platform. I've had a few cars that rode like trucks, they were still cars.

It's a good argument.

Doesn't make much difference, they should get better gas mileage anyway because it's the right thing to do regardless of the classification scheme.
