My attempt at an alternate explanation. The men originally paid $30, BUT they were supposed to only had paid $25. So, forget about the $30 and concentrate on the $25. They each put out $10 and then got $1 back, so 3 x 9 = 27. Now 27 MINUS the 2 they let the bellboy keep (27 - 2) gives the 25 that they actually paid. (the hotel now has $25, not $30) The trick is you are doing multiplication then addition trying to get back to $30 when, once the $5 is refunded, you should be doing multiplication then subtraction to get to the new total of $25.
