Re: Intel has scrapped plans for a 2GHz Xeon processor for workstations and servers

P4 puts out too much heat to stuff a pair of them into a box at 2GHZ. If one of the chips were ever even partly "downwind" of the other in the case's airflow, it would be impossible to cool.

AMD's 1.2GHZ Athlon MP beats the Xeon 1.7, but not by enough to sway most conservative server buyers.

AMD is expected to release Athlon MPs at 1.4 or 1.5GHZ this month. Those chips will outright embarrass a pair of Xeon 1.7s, and now it looks like AMD will have this advantage for almost half a year. This could be enough to get AMD a little more traction in the high end workstation and mid-range server markets.

By the time Prestonia is out, the hammers will be sampling, and may even be shipping. It's too soon to claim Intel's server strategy is crumbling, but it is definitely showing some cracks around the foundation.
