Bin Laden is asked to leave
Afghanistan

Islamic clerics are asking Osama bin Laden to voluntarily
leave Afghanistan, where he and his followers have had
sanctuary for five years.

The announcement from a Taliban news agency statement
comes at the end of a two-day meeting in Kabul.

It is unclear whether this will be enough to dissuade
President Bush from launching massive military strikes
against the country.

Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar, who is believed to
have final decision-making power, did not attend the clerics'
meetings.

A deadline has not been set for bin Laden to respond to the
announcement.

"The Ulema wants the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to
encourage Osama to leave the country in the proper time
and of his own free will," the statement says.

They also are prepared to call a holy war against the United
States, if its troops attack their country. "If a powerful
country attacks a weak country, it is a jihad for all Muslims.
When a non-Muslim country attacks a Muslim country, it is a
jihad," the clerics claim.

The final statement appears to be a compromise between
the hard-liners among the clerics, who would be ready to go
to war to protect bin Laden, and those who wanted to rid the
country of a devastating threat.

The clerics say the United Nations and the Organization of
the Islamic Conference, an organization of 52 Islamic
nations, should investigate claims about bin Laden's guilt
and demand U.S. forces do not put civilians at risk if they
attack Afghanistan.
