Bombardier Receives Order for 240 Electrostar Cars for the UK
MONTREAL, QUEBEC-SEPTEMBER 20, 2001 - 09:20 EDT -Bombardier Transportation announced that it has confirmed an order with GOVIA for the supply of 240 Electrostar electrical multiple units to replace slam door trains on key South Central routes in the UK. The order is valued at approximately Cdn$465 million (325 million euros).
This announcement brings the total number of Electrostar units ordered to date in the UK to 906 cars. Firm orders and options on hand currently amount to 1742 cars.
President of Bombardier Transportation, Europe, Intercity Trains, Rik Dobbelaere, commented: "I am delighted that GOVIA has shown confidence in our Electrostar product, which is already proving very successful and popular with the travelling public in the South of England. The air-conditioned Electrostar units will be manufactured at Bombardier Transportation's production facility in Derby, UK. Bombardier's plant in Vasteras, Sweden will provide propulsion, train control and communications. Deliveries are scheduled to start in 2002. Gangwayed and carpeted throughout, the new trains will offer a high level of amenity, security and passenger comfort, as well as increased capacity.
GOVIA, which is a UK-based holding company jointly owned by the Go-Ahead Group plc and Keolis of France, completed the acquisition of Connex South Central Limited in August 2001. Since then, it has taken over the management and running of the South Central franchise.
