Shelburne, VT. area.....
Hi Richard,
Well, it sounds like New Mexico should be put on my vacation "wish list"...(-:
Here's goes... with another one in the "east". The area south of Burlington, Vermont is a really nice spot. The Shelburne Museum (just on the edge of Burlington) is a great place for those who are interested in Americana, woodcarving, folk art, etc.... The museum consists of many houses and other buildings which have been relocated to the property. Each is filled with superb collections. They have a tremendous collection of carousel animals from many of the best turn-of-the-century companies in North America. Other great collections are of: duck, goose and shorebird decoys (probably unparalled by any other museum); horse-drawn vehicles of every description; antique toys; and textiles.
My husband and I are "hiker/canoeist" types,... and there are plenty of spots to pursue either of these interests. We stayed at a bed & breakfast near the foot of Mount Philo State Park and walked to the top just around dusk with a light rain falling (there is a paved road -- quite a steep grade, but an easy hike for anyone who jogs or does a lot of hiking). The road is sheltered by a nice hardwood forest canopy... and there are many wildflowers along the way. On our trip down in the twilight, thousands of fireflies drew lazy arcs around us... and a white-tailed deer hopped onto the road just ahead of us then continued on down the mountainside after stopping to give us a good look... There are a few campsites on the mountaintop for camper-types.
The area from Burlington to Middlebury seems to be populated by a lot of artists/artisans. For those who are interested in these things, check out the Frog Hollow Gallery in Middlebury, or visit one of the many artists' studios which is listed on maps available at most tourist info kiosks. The Vermont Wildfower Farm is also worth a visit too.
I realize that I haven't mentioned much about "night life" etc... but I think there are lots of interesting things happening in Burlington year round... seem to be a lot of music festivals, etc...
Now it's your turn again...(-: Regards, Bev |
