Tokyo (Dow Jones) Thursday September 20, 5:19 PM KDDI Corp. (J.KDD or 9433), Japan's No.2 telecom carrier, said Thursday it will postpone the launch of its next-generation 3G mobile phone service to April from autumn.
The service will be initially offered in the Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka areas. The service areas will be expanded later, KDDI said.
The 3G service will have a transmission speed of 144Kbps, compared with KDDI's existing CDMA technology, which operates at 64Kbps.

KDDI president Tadashi Onodera attributed the delay in offering its 144 Kbps speed cdma2000 1X 3G service to the slower than expected development of software to be installed at its communication relay stations.
"Developing the software has become more difficult as the scale has increased," Onodera said.
He rejected recent media reports that the delay stemmed from the late development of terminal handsets.
Although the 3G service has been delayed, KDDI has decided to offer movie clip distribution services in December by using its current 64Kbps cdmaOne service, which it initially planned to provide through cdma2000 1X.
"64Kbps is fast enough to watch (movie clips)," which mostly run only for 10 to 15 seconds, Onodera said. <<
