we all know what happened to the british "empire", the roman "empire", the spanish "empire", etc.

This is disingenous and ignorant. Rome was a republic for extended periods of its history. By the time the British empire fell it was a republic.

Superpowers fall because nothing lasts forever. Republics fall as well (Denmark, Czecslovakia, perhaps soon the UK).

One way not to fall is to never stand up. That is what Pat proposed yesterday and you bought into it. Seemingly this terrorist attack produced a lot more casualties than I first presumed.
