I think my employers would object if I shared our software with you :^) but how about taking something that is multi-platform and already in the public domain. I suggest the Apache web server. I know it was originally produced for UNIX but they do produce a version for Windows.

I ran the build twice on my HP Omnibook P2 366 notebook and it took 139.2 seconds the first time and 138.8 the second, so it seems pretty consistent. Only problem might be that perhaps this is too small a program. I haven't tried it, but I would guess an Athlon 1.4 can probably do this in about 20 seconds. (I am laying the groundwork for a new Athlon 1.1 notebook :)

To download, go to www.apache.org/dist/httpd and download apache_1.3.20.zip. Unzip, switch to the apache_1.3.20\src directory and run "nmake -f makefile.win". (Assuming you have Visual C++ installed with the command prompt environment set up correctly.)

In fact I ran with the following command file just to make sure the starting point was consistent each time.

nmake -f makefile.win clean
time <nul
nmake -f makefile.win
time <nul

I think the Apache JServ code might be a good candidate for a Java benchmark as well. I will try this out when I get some spare time.
