I agree that the war on drugs is clap trap, and also that criminalizing addiction behavior likely has no use, or is counter productive. However, I do not agree that it hurts only oneself. Some of those things I wrote about perhaps would go away if it were legal and cheap (e.g. blowing up one's own home). However, the addiction to legal drugs already exists and exacts a huge toll. The problem I'm talking about is the addiction itself, which you claimed only hurted oneself, and that simply does not bear out.
I work with some alcoholics. After lunch, they are worthless. An addict may function well enough to some, but I think you are kidding yourself, or accepting their conning, if you think their addiction has no ill effect. My brother, a long term addict of many drugs, both legal and illegal, has done amazing destruction -- totalled cars, defaulted on loans, compulsively lies and cheats, and a variety of other things I'd rather not mention. None of these things were in pursuit of his drugs (and his non-drug addictions), but caused by his addictions and their effect on him. |
