Would you care to explain why you think mutually exclusive and opposite claims can both be right?

Well, obviously, they can't be. But I think your question is simplistic.

The question for a religion becomes one of what to teach. It seems to me a matter of both belief and priority.

If the religion believes either that we cannot know which is right or that the particulars of the religious practices, themselves, are not as important as living a good life, then it will teach that people, in Neo's words, "might differ rationally and in good faith." I believe you call those Christian sects "liberal."

If the religion believes that it is both right and that asserting that rightness overrides all earthly considerations, then it will teach intolerance, directly or indirectly.

The latter, of course, is what gives religion a bad name.
