I have a vivid recollection of being told that the non-Catholics would be in purgatory

It's been a long time CR, but I don't think little kids who haven't had a chance to do much sinning go to purgatory. That's where people work off their sins prior to entering heaven. You would be punishing the innocent if you sent babies there. I think they just get stuck in the cosmos somewhere. That was one of the things that bothered me about the notion. Maybe limbo looks like an auditorium. I think that purgatory is more like San Quentin. At least that was what I was taught.
