The complete watchlist and commentary prior to the open today...

September 20, 2001 (Watchlist Below)

The trade deficit shrank slightly in July, a reflection of the weak economic conditions around the world.

Crude oil inventory dropped slightly, but remains above 300 million barrels. However, gasoline inventory continues to decline. It is possible that we will see a drop in demand over the near future that could limit price increases.

The National Association of Home Builders Housing Market Index dropped significantly, and is close to the low in January. Housing should now become one of the more important indictors of the economy. More data is released today (8:30 AM ET) with the New Residential Construction figures for August.

Weekly Jobless Claims is released at 8:30 AM ET. The 4-week moving average stands at 411 thousand. We should see this spiking higher in coming weeks.

The Philadelphia Fed Survey for September is released at 12:00 noon.

After the close Tenet Healthcare (THC) issued an upside pre-announcement.

A couple of home builders, KB Home (KBH) and Lennar (LEN) release earnings before the open today. Biomet (BMET) also releases before the open. Liberate Technology (LBRT) releases after the close. Please note that we have LBRT on the list today. Jabil Circuit (JBL), Nike (NKE) and Palm (PALM) also report earnings after the close.

The rally during the last hour yesterday was a good sign, but it is hard to expect a lot when the market continues to make lower lows and lower closes. A change in either of those would be good, and maybe today since the low was set in panic. Nevertheless, the internals continue south. The screened stock ratio is very negative at 25.5 to 4.1 favoring selling. Market risk remains high. The sell side of the ratio is down at the maximum our screening displays. This shows that down-trending stocks are getting the volume. "Lite" mode is still the safest position.

Beverages, select communication and medical equipment were strong.
