'Yesterday, the parliament heard a motion that would have made my government and my country a source of strength for the US. However, this prime minister and his liberal party defeated the motion. '
Not this, i guess, because it's still in motion -
'OTTAWA (CP) - A new anti-terrorism law is on its way after last week's attacks in the U.S., says Justice Minister Anne McLellan, and the government may seek to revisit a Supreme Court case involving the deportation of suspected terrorists.
New legal measures will "strike at the heart" of terrorist fundraising capabilities, McLellan said Wednesday. "Terrorism has a certain similarity to organized crime. What fuels it is money. And therefore what we have to do is strike at the ability of terrorist organizations to raise money."
The federal government's first priority will be new legislation allowing it to implement a 1999 United Nations international convention to suppress terrorist financing, McLellan said.
Canada has signed on to the convention, but has yet to ratify it by making it a crime for people to knowingly fund terrorism. [ed - how absurd, what are they doing, watching the clock for when their pension cheques roll in]
A bill that would allow the government to strip charitable status from groups that fund terrorism is currently being studied by the all-party Commons finance committee.
Whether that bill should be toughened, as critics have suggested, or blended into a broader anti-terrorism bill "is a decision that will be made in the days ahead," McLellan said.'
