Yes. I have a concern though. Far too many in the government keep talking about how this war is different and we'll "smoke out" the terrorists. That is a fallacy for a number of reasons.

I know that many Americans I have spoken with are still in a state of shock and disbelief that this happened here. In a way the catastrophe is so enormous that it is hard to grasp. What happens when it gets brought home to a local shopping mall? What happens when suicide bombers coordinate attacks on a dozen or so jam-packed restaurants in LA on a Saturday night? I don't think many Americans are prepared for the country turning into what we have watched from afar in Israel and the West Bank.

The measures to protect Americans right now are not nearly enough. Again, we're waiting for something to happen before we take preventive measures. We are talking airline security. How about banning or at least searching all bags brought into public places? How about installing geiger counters on every stop light entering into a major city in the US so nuclear materials in transit could be identified and taken out? And perhaps also installing them on every vehicle in the United States or entering the United States. How about requiring all foreign nationals entering the country to be registered with a central database available to the Homeland Defense Agency? And how about compiling an extensive list of anyone and everyone who has ever threatened or incited violence against the United States or its NATO allies permanently banning them from the United States and European UNion. (incidentally, mullahs in London have called for the death of all westerners only this past weekEU and em from entry into the United States. I think these and no action was taken.) I believe these kinds of measures, abhorrent as they sound now, may be necessary sooner or later.

In my eyes, the only way to stop this is to punish these states severely. The PLO still seeks the destruction of Jews in their charter. Many leaders in Islamic countries openly call for the destruction of the West. If those nations cannot get a handle on these influences then I think high time we and our allies take steps to enforce order, and that is going to entail either threatening the destruction of infrastructure or occupying many countries in the Middle East. I think Deputy Secretary of Defense Wolfowitz is absolutely right: we need to end these states. We eliminate these terrorist groups they will be replaced by others. The only way to eliminate the power of these groups to attack us is to enter into their society and make anyone who assists or foments this kind of activity pay a very dear price for it. If that means toppling governments and sending in an occupation force so be it. The activities of many mainstream groups in the Middle East are no different than an incitement to riot and murder. Unless we target these areas, this war may turn out making Vietnam look like Disneyland.

This was a symbolic event but an important one: remember when the US military agreed to Saudi demands that women in the military not drive cars? That took some brazen nerve, was an enormous insult when our soldiers were fighting and dying to protect their billions, forgiving and forgetting that these states had massively blackmailed western economies only less than 20 years earlier with an oil embargo. By allowing our principles to be stepped on in this way, we gave many in the Middle East the dangerous signal that we would tolerate their trampling our freedoms. It was a major mistake. I hope we don't make the same mistake again now. It has been more than enough.
