CDMA to GSM SMS service extended in Australia (21-Sep-01)

Telstra CDMA mobile phone users will soon be able to send SMS's to any other mobile phone users thanks to deals announced yesterday. Up until now mobile phone users on Telstra’s CDMA network and those on Optus and Vodafone's GSM networks could not communicate by SMS. Telstra has been pushing extremely hard to get this functionality in place, paying for and implementing a solution as well as diligently negotiating a commercial agreement with both Vodafone and Optus. Agreements were signed this week, complementing May’s agreement with Hutchison. The service will commence imminently.

Since SMS interconnection to Telstra's GSM network was implemented in April 2000, there has been a 200% growth in messages sent. It is estimated there were 300 million messages sent in July alone.

“Telstra is pleased that this popular form of communication is now available between customers on any Australian cellular networks and looks forward to customers taking advantage of the service,” Mr Johnstone said. Most new CDMA handsets sold in Australia are SMS capable.
