I guess it fits the "siege mentality" of most Americans.

Considering that throughout the history of the US, we've always been outnumbered, both in number and population, by non-democratic states, stating we live in a siege mentality would be a fairly accurate statement. It's also why the US had traditionally been introverted and isolationist with regard to becoming involved in international affairs before WWII.. We have felt secure behind the security blanket of our two oceans.

And there have always been "the poor".. In fact, some would say that many Americans in the past consisted of "the poor" (indentured servants, subsistence farmers.. etc)..

But the US is not responsible for "the poor".. Those poor people were poor before the arrival of the US, and they likely will stay that way until they rise up again those elements that have oppressed them from within their own nation.

You can compare the existence of the United States as comparable to building a shiny mansion in a ghetto...

We didn't create the ghetto..., we're just living in it and trying to change the "scenery" as we can.. In fact, it has been the US who has been trying to encourage "local" economic development, or helping to rebuild the burnout homes of our neighbors, who often bicker and fight with one another over property lines.

And since there are no police available in this little community, the US has to make it's own justice when it feels it's neighbors have gotten out of line and are directly threatening us.

So you can define it as "hatred of the poor or the rich" if you want. But in my eyes, I look beyond the rich.... and to the people who empower the rich to represent them.

For the rich would rather that the US not respond and create continuing turmoil throughout the world.. It's bad for business..

But the people of the US are demanding vengeance and justice.. and they are demanding that this evil be destroyed, or at least neutralized, so they can return to the peacefulness of their lives.
