Yep... and the only way he maintains power is through repression, and a policy of divide and conquer between subordinates.

I can only imagine how difficult it is to live in such a paranoid society, where everyone's energy is spent on developing schemes and plot against one another, or defending themselves against someone else's.

And no.. Hussein is not dumb... He's knows his own people VERY WELL.. The problem for him is that he filters his impression of the west through his experiences in Iraq.

In fact, if I recall correctly, he's only traveled outside of Iraq maybe once or twice since he seized power in the '60's...
