Martin,

I have just 'found' the IMMM thread and have not read through the rest of the messages, so please forgive me if there is some redundancy.

It is true that UPR was one of the earlier users of horizontal well technology. However, it is so commonplace now that I doubt that they could be considered 'experts'. For that matter, it would be one of the service companies (i.e. Baker Hughes or Sperry-Sun) that would have the real expertise.

Without knowing the specifics of the geology of the area, you can generalise by saying that the comparative expense of horizontal well technology dictates that it should be used only where additional recovery offsets the upfront costs. In the case of the Austin Chalk, it was to connect multiple fractures. Another possible use might be for access by a single wellbore of several relatively high poroperm zones separated by poor rock.

Sorry for the diversion. Thought I may as well throw a few (relevant?) facts into the conversation.

Cheers,

Mike
