I wasn't able to find anything about how MOT is going to use this patent but MOT does provide their own lithium ion batteries. At least, they market them under their own name. If they make their own Li ion batteries, then they are just manufacturing them for their own use as they don't currently market them outside of their own products. This might be expected for any plastic battery also.

Here is some info on 3M's plastic battery. It's dated; Feb. 1996. It also uses the metallic form of Li. It's interesting to note that Li is the lightest metal. Others have abandoned the metallic form of Li because of the dendrite growth problem which shorts out the battery.
