when an impoverished, powerless populace consents to be sent to the front on orders from a murderous, psychotic thug and then promptly surrenders at the first sight of an Coalition soldier, I think that is not cowardice but a display of eminent good sense and appropriate survival skills.

The sad truth was that in the Gulf War a majority of Iraqi infantry were unwilling soldiers, forced to fight on threat of execution of their wives and children. They were told that Americans were cannibals and would eat them alive. Surrendering in this climate was an act of courage. That was one big moral problem with the execution of our Gulf War strategy: the infantry, least to blame, were slaughtered, while the perfectly willing and loyal thugs of the Republican Guard were allowed to escape the consequences.
