I love this country but from what I have read and seen, we are not always saints.
Who said we are. We don't have to be saints for there to be an important moral distinction between our military actions and the attack on the WTC.
Tim, I was responding to Harry's holier than thou attitude re our military. Hence my response...our military have not always been saints. But the real issue here is why are you jumping on my comments? I have not said anything that has not been said before...our military has had far from a clean slate in the past and its common knowledge.
There is this incredible effort to distance us from the terrorists but there have been some very ugly incidents in our past as well. And I think its important to remember that in these times where are going into battle again. Eventually this conflict will end and its in our best interest to carry ourselves as well as possible under the circumstances.
Along these lines......a few days ago I told the thread of some remarks made by my friends the other nite. They condemned the Afghans in an incredibly hateful way and called for their extermination. However, the bad mouthing didn't end there. They went on to call Gore and Lieberman "baby killers" [knowing full well that I had voted for them],and that "they [Gore and Lieberman] would be crying like little babies if they were in the WH right now"; that Clinton, not bin Laden, was the antichrist and if it weren't for God's divine intervention, Gore would have become president. I have known these people for over two years..they are very typically upper middle class in almost every respect and the wife is from an upper class TX family. I had no idea that they thought that way...and I can't imagine that I said anything to provoke them since I refuse to talk politics with anyone except on this thread. Needless to say, our friendship is over.
My point is is that the seemingly nicest people don't always show their true colors until times of crisis. In fact someone once said and I am paraphrasing..."don't judge your friends during the good times, only during the bad". And that's the way I have seen our military behave. During non combat, they seem like the typical all American guys or gals....but once they are in combat, there are times when all the rules are thrown out the window and that's when the atrocities are perpetrated.
We will make you into a GW fan yet.
When hell freezes over, Harry, when hell freezes over!
What do you think of his speech tonight.
I went out and missed it. I heard it was very inspiring...so much so, that they expected it to make the markets rally. Not so far but I keep hoping. <g>
