I drove by my local mall (Northgate in Seattle) yesterday in early evening and it was the emptiest I've seen the lot in several years, not counting the earthquake day a few months ago when it was totally closed. I don't see how consumers can feel anything but either a) pessimism -- layoffs, high credit card load, home turf war & war on the horizon; or b) denial -- gimme anubber beer!
