Hi sschahal,
I don't have any more insights about ONI's miss than what has been reported by financial media. Inherently, ONI carries greater risk in comparison with CIEN due to the former's narrower product mix, customers base, resources etc. Companies like CIEN and JNPR have been exploring the off-shore markets to somewhat compensate for the domestic slowdown.
=======================
Here is some news about CIEN which, to my surprise, was not found in Ciena's own website.

Sep 20, 2001 (TELECOMWORLDWIRE via COMTEX) -- Zephyr Communications, a US/Czech IP communications services provider, has selected CIENA Corp's optical technology for its new European fibre network.
Zephyr's network will link Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria and Poland with a flexible, high-capacity fibre infrastructure. It will also connect to Zephyr's other European networks to offer a fast communications link between western and eastern Europe.
The new network will be based on Sentry 4000, CIENA's 40-channel long-haul optical transport system that is capable of carrying up to 100Gb/s of data. The value of the contract was not disclosed.
