I remember only a very general mention of these topics, rather than an analysis. I am sure that as an engineer who has lived and worked in SV most of your professional life, you have a very good intuitive feel for the relative reputations of the firms involved. What I am really after, however, is some understanding of how these firms use technology in a way that:

(1) lowers costs
(2) differentiates their product
(3) protects them from imitation
(4) gives them a "first-mover advantage"
(5) improves overall industry structure

This is the framework used by Michael Porter in "Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance" (Free Press, 1985) Chapter 5, Technology and Competitive Advantage.

Don't be crushed. Unless you are an MBA, you are forgiven if you have not read it.
