Re: HP's new entry-level Windows XP machine, the $749 Pavilion 7935, comes with a 1.3GHz AMD Athlon, 128MB of SDRAM, a 40GB hard drive, an 8X CD-RW drive and a network connector.

For $200 more, the new Pavilion 7955 packs a 1.5GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, 256MB of SDRAM

Thanks for the post. I was wondering why AMD jumped at the end of the day. It sounds like they are still very much in the OEM ball game and not relegated to white boxes alone (as some were starting to fear).

It will be interesting to see benchmarks comparing a 1.3GHZ Athlon to a more expensive 1.5GHZ P4 when both are equipped with SDRAM. As a reminder:

1.5GHZ SDRAM P4 has a tough time keeping up with a 1GHZ Athlon, Duron, or PIII (it can take on a 1GHZ Celeron). I think Intel is taking something of a risk letting P4 go head to head against Athlon when both are on single channel motherboards, especially single channel SDRAM motherboards. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
