Maybe Not Carte Blanc

But certainly the ability to support significantly support the market.

The problem is that their "support" in fact is interference in the free market which causes significant transfers of wealth - most notably to the banks and investments brokers.

An even more precipitous fall this last week would have been a significant problem for the derivative writers. A more orderly decline also allows the well connected to liquidate more of their own holdings at better prices.

It is a zero sum game though and someone's gain is someone's loss.

It was my understanding that in this country we let the market decide who gets what and not the government.
