Actually, we already have buses that run on soy oil. Exhaust smells like the deep fryer at McDonald's.

I think we both know why the highways today are full of SUVs which get about 16 miles to the gallon: Supply-demand-profits. Detroit can make more money turning out Ford Broncos with monster engines than little battery-powered cars. Mobil-Texaco-Exxon can earn more money filling up Ford Broncos than cars that get 55 miles to the gallon. At times Congress has acted wisely, i.e., insisting that cars attain certain mileage figures by certain dates. However, much more remains to be done. (Not all issues can be explained in Gnostic terms, i.e., light-good-conservatives vs. black-evil-liberals. This is one of those issues.)

Perhaps the recession we have now entered will provide added incentive to rethink our energy dependence on the Middle East and the types of vehicles that we're driving. Say what you want about "liberal thinkers," but "environmentalists" have been at the forefront of this debate for a long time.
