BURLINGTON, Mass. June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- VideoServer, Inc. (Nasdaq:VSVR),
the leader in networked conferencing, today unveiled its H.323 direction.
VideoServer's standards-based family of products will empower millions of
users with the ability to multipoint conference over the Internet, corporate
intranets and LANs.
"VideoServer leads the ISDN multipoint conferencing world with more than
65 percent market share. In addition, we are committing our extensive
expertise in multipoint, multimedia conferencing to meet the requirements of
the massive IP market and to ensure that our current customers have the
necessary products to take full advantage of this new arena," said Arnold
Englander, Vice President, Marketing at VideoServer.
The recent completion of the H.323 standard is key to the mass
proliferation of conferencing. Now, for the first time the millions of users
with access to the Internet, corporate intranets and LANs can conduct
multipoint conferences with each other, as well as with their colleagues using
ISDN room, rollabout and desktop conferencing systems.
Through the remainder of 1997, VideoServer will introduce the following
H.323 products:

-- H.323/H.320 Conference Gateway
The VideoServer gateway will enable the traditional ISDN conferencing
customer to communicate via video, audio and data with IP-based conferencing
users. The VideoServer gateway will be unsurpassed in bringing to market the
features required to handle truly complex conferences. Unlike competing
products, the VideoServer gateway will support combinations of multiple
sessions, high-speed/high-quality 384 kbps conferences, transcoding between
WAN and LAN audio standards, and complete support for T.120 document
conferencing.

-- H.323 Multimedia Conference Server
The VideoServer H.323 Multimedia Conference Server (MCS) is fully-
compliant with the H.323 standard. For the first time, users can leverage
their existing LAN, Internet or intranet connections to participate in
multipoint audio, video and data conferences and use their connection to the
World Wide Web to schedule and manage their own conferences via VideoServer's
Web user interface. The MCS supports the H.323 audio, video and T.120 data
standards. It distinguishes itself by also supporting standard telephone
lines. With the audio transcoding capabilities of the VideoServer MCS, H.323
TCP/IP endpoints can participate in conferences with POTS callers. Unlike
host CPU-based multipoint control units, which are limited in
price/performance and scaleability functions, the VideoServer H.323 MCS is
based on a scaleable architecture and like its counterpart, the VideoServer
Multimedia 440, uses embedded digital signal processors to provide economical
price/performance over a wide range of network and user requirements.

-- VideoServer Gatekeeper
VideoServer is developing a comprehensive gatekeeper solution that will
enable MIS managers to control multimedia traffic over networks. The
VideoServer MCS supports all of the mandatory and optional functions of the
H.323 specification, including admission control, bandwidth management and
name resolution. Because the gatekeeper is based on the Windows NT platform,
it can run with the VideoServer MCS or as a standalone product.
