[ParcPlace wins first place in application development competition]

( BW)(PARCPLACE-DIGITALK)(PARQ) ParcPlace wins first place in annual
French Olympiade application development competition; ParcPlace
triumphs over Oracle and Unify in international RAD race

Business Editors and Computer Writers

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 1997--
ParcPlace-Digitalk, Inc., (NASDAQ:PARQ), leading developer of
the VisualWorks and VisualWave application development environments,
announced today that ParcPlace has won first place in this year's
French Olympiade rapid application development (RAD) competition,
held in Biarritz, France.
The 1997 French Olympiade rapid application development (RAD)
competition was sponsored by INGENIA and Cap Gemini Institute, and
was held during the "13th Arena of Information Technology". This
competition was designed to let software vendors demonstrate their
abilities to build and rapidly evolve complex, mission-critical
applications using the tools of their choice in real-world
situations. The competition provides one of the few accurate gauges
in the industry to prove which application development tools provide
the highest productivity for IT organizations.
The competition is a regular event at the annual two-day
Information Technology Forum held in Biarritz, France. This year,
competing two-man development teams from ParcPlace, Oracle and Unify
were asked to produce a fully functional sales application for the
automobile industry. The teams were required to include the
following:

-- A web based automobile catalog, displaying available cars categorized by
models and manufacturers

-- Interactive order processing capabilities for customers to indicate the
make and model of the car they would like to purchase, preferred exterior and
interior colors, desired features and accessories, and how far they are
willing to drive to make the purchase

-- Dealer order processing capabilities to provide upstream information back
to manufacturer's headquarters and maintain inventory control

-- Provide a communication avenue between customer and dealer

This type of application is a prime example of a real-world
business application. Ultimately, most auto manufacturers are
chasing full integration of information systems regardless of
national boundaries. The idea behind the Web is to make the
purchasing process more efficient. This in turn will reduce the
purchase/ordering time frame for the customer and provide an accurate
inventory control system and production line forecast for the
manufacturing of models and parts.
The development teams from ParcPlace, Oracle and Unify were
challenged to demonstrate what could be completed in a short two-day
competition with current client/server/web technologies. Teams were
judged by a jury composed of 50 professionals participating in the
event. The ParcPlace team's winning application demonstrated the
ability of ParcPlace development environments to rapidly integrate
different technologies and languages, including HTML, Smalltalk, Java
and CORBA.
ParcPlace's use of dynamic HTML, generated graphics, VRML and
frames resulted in an application superior to those of both Oracle
and Unify. The inclusion of ObjectShare's PARTS for Java tool in the
winning application demonstrated the ease with which developers can
integrate applications written in several languages, creating a truly
unified, multilingual solution.
"We are proud of the accomplishments of our team at this event,
and are excited to be able to cite this as an example of how
ParcPlace can provide a multilingual solution for today's distributed
computing needs," stated Richard Dym, senior vice president of
marketing for ParcPlace.
"The inherent openness in ParcPlace's tools allow developers to
integrate smoothly -- not only with additional ParcPlace tools, but
with other languages and technologies as well. This is clearly
demonstrated by our team's use of Smalltalk and Java to create a
dynamic client/server/Web application. It is this ability to provide
a truly multilingual solution that sets ParcPlace apart."
