"America's New War"
So said the headline in a TV programe which I saw yesterday. Gone was the previous 'Mission Infinite Justice' hastily withdrawn because Muslims and Christians alike have pointed out the only God is capable of infinite justice!
So the war is already becoming an obscene TV series? And America, a great nation, has blundered into a resolution of Congress approved by all but one woman of conscience which empowers it to break international law on a vast scale.
'You're either for us or against us' (or face the consequences - bombs and all) Those of you who think (do I need to compile a list of those here who don't or can't?) must realise the enormity of this carte blanche resoulution?
So where is America's moral imperitive? Does it stand by if Russia says to the Baltic States "You're either with us or against us" Or China to Taiwan? Any nation ot another?
Since the end of the cold war we have seen the emergence of a doctrine - now crystallised in what might be called the (GW) Bush doctrine. 'Might is right'
People on this thread talk blithley of the defeat of Muslim fundamentalism as if this is even remotely possible. Is the US going to have to occupy all of the muslim countries and become the new colonial power of the middle east?
Already we see the strains this situation is placing on the Saudis, on Pakistan, and IMO on Egypt, Indonesia.
The war is against terrorism. Religous leaders are trying to send a message to the States, hopefully Blair (whose public stance vis a vis the States can best be summarised as 'yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir' or 'how high do you want me to jump?), Chirac, the Germans, and others are telling Bush behind the scenes that he should pause before embarking on the road to disaster. |
