This may be a bit out of context....

Assuming extreme circumstances, why is there a problem with bankrupting businesses that provide esential services?

As long as we have a safety net that provides the means to ensure that the businesses continue to operate effectively under BK, things might work well and you can prevent subsidizing risk taking and incompetency.

My guess is that a few of the airlines were going down the toilet in this recession anyway. Their balance sheets are a great lesson in stupidity. And most likely, a few smart ones would have survived and gotten much stronger.

We can't allow these extreme circumstances to destroy the airline industry, but IMO a severe beating would be healthy.
