The INS uses live scan electronic fingerprint scanning systems to digitally capture and electronically submit benefits applicants' fingerprint images to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The systems are also used to expedite applicant processing for immigrants and permanent residents that are awaiting visas or otherwise wishing to adjust their status in this country.

Origins
Visionics Corporation (Nasdaq: VSNX) was formed as a merger between a public company, Digital Biometrics, Inc. and a private one, Visionics Corporation. The merger was completed on February 15, 2001.
