John, I don't have time to look up my old posts, but I warned many times of this very danger--i.e., that we had external enemies who would capitalize on our distraction of our president to attack us. If Bush were found to be having an affair, or even if he lied about it under oath, I would not advocate distracting him from his task of protecting us by constant hearings and inquiries and depositions. You may say, well, we are in danger now, so we would have more restraint. I say, we were in just as much danger then, but we didn't do our job to comprehend it, and devoted the resources of our government instead to matters that were not of vital national importance.
I pray that, in the future, we have a keener understanding that our lives are in danger, and that the president will only be distracted from his duties if there is clear and almost irrebutable evidence that he has committed treason or a very serious violation of criminal laws. |
