I think the specter is real and we should be vigilant. There is a bipartisan concern among people of good conscience that this will be another step toward the restriction of our liberties.

We should deploy ATF and DEA on the airplanes and give them the following priorities:

1) Air safety
2) time and conditions permitting, hard-drug interdiction

If they see someone with a kilo of heroine, then they can make an arrest. Short of that, the rest of the time they should be doing something that really protects us. We can't fight every asinine battle that someone can think up.

In these times, I just can't get that excited about the alleged corruption of the airlines. Flights are cheaper on a per capita income basis than they have ever been in my lifetime. Does anyone REALLY believe that AMR and UAL are somehow more vulnerable than any other American airline? I sure don't. We live in an open society and I for one am not ready to embrace a police state in order to live my life in apparent "safety".
