The thing you are missing is that there is NOT something unique about this combination in people (we just like to think there is). For everything you say about humans, spirit and the like, there is someone else who can claim some other relationship between those same entities, based upon other untestable hypotheses. I was just extending that to include animals. The SOCAS acts as a buffer between my extreme ad absurdum beliefs and your (IMO) extreme beliefs. So, if I launch the church of the cosmic force, and I get into power, I can't let my preferred religion dominate you. That's good for everyone.

<The State is made up of human beings. It has no life apart from that. So the real split that takes place is not between two institutions, but between two aspects of humanity. >

The institutions of man are no more rifted by your metaphysical POV than they are by mine. By making the institutions agnostic, we all benefit in the long run. While you'd like to say there is some divine spark, I say there is no evidence for this that unique to people. We make harsh cuts all the time and the one where others beliefs are insulated from me seems totally justified, especially when people seem confused about the author of their "software".
