Chomsky's reason is fascinating:
--bin Laden is angry because we support un-Islamic regimes, commonly known as moderate Arab regimes. We should withdraw that support so they can fall to fundamentalist regimes similar to the Taliban in which there is even less democracy, less free speech, and less religious tolerance. Corruption? Well, gee, nothing corrupt is going on under the Taliban--just the torture and persecution of women, dissidents, and religious minorities. Not to mention the worldwide conglomerate--Taliban Heroin exports, Inc!
--Now, the main danger, Chomsky says, it that we overreact, causing the moderate Arab countries to face turmoil and perhaps fall into the hands of fundamentalists similar to the Taliban. If we don't react, we must change all our policies to suit bin Laden, so that he likes us in the future. We must stop supporting Israel's "brutal" military occupation--the first brutal occupation is history where the oppressors gave the oppressed 70,000 automatic rifles!!!
--Iraq was gassing Kurds & we were supporting Saddam. But now Chomsky is against us opposing him because civilians are being harmed. But, if we opposed him conventially, so as to alleviate the suffering of the Kurds and his own people, this would cause civilian casualties, radicalize the people, and be terrible as well;
--We can't go after bin Laden because innocent Afghans will suffer. We should just leave him alone to launch more terror attacks against us, possibly next time using even more lethal weapons. Lesson: You can kill all the Americans you want, so long as you hide among the general populace.
Vintage Chomsky--all hot air, nothing the US does is good, and "solutions" that would only cause even greater misery. |
