Internet slowed by undersea cable break

(21 September 2001) Two undersea fiber-optic cables were broken off the coast of China Thursday severely disrupting Internet traffic throughout Asia.

The breakages were probably caused by a ship’s anchor falling about 30 kilometers of Guangdong province in Southern China, according to ccidnet.com. One of the cables connects Hong Kong and Shantou and the other Shantou and Taiwan and Japan.

Two repair ships hired by cable owners, Reach, have been dispatched from Shanghai and Tokyo but will not be on site until Tuesday, the company said.

Telstra Corp. and Pacific Century CyberWorks own Reach.

There have been several breaks in undersea cables in recent months off the coast of northeast Asia.
