I think it is an intensely personal decision I'm not sure it is actually political in the sense you understand it I think those monks were overcome with the suffering of the world it is actually more of a martyrdom to live with the knowledge of the suffering world than to try to remove oneself from it By trying to escape you doom yourself to more suffering at least in the Buddhist tradition as I understand it
