US despised for exploiting poor states: Mexican bishop

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS (Mexico) -- The United States should reflect on 'why it is so despised by many people in the world' in the wake of deadly terror attacks on the United States, a Mexican bishop said on Sunday.

The United States 'must realise that much of its wealth is full of injustices, because its companies have become rich exploiting our poor countries', Bishop of San Cristobal, Felipe Arizmendi Esquivel said in a sermon.

The bishop, whose diocese is in the southern state of Chiapas, home base of the anti-government Zapatista rebels, said he deplored the loss of innocent lives in the attacks with hijacked airliners.

But he said it would be more prudent for the nation to stop committing human-rights abuses and injustices against the world's poorer countries than to seek retribution.

The United States 'has generated much violence to protect its economic interests, and now it is reaping what it has sown', he said. -- AFP
