My take is that Masood got wasted by the Russians the "Grozny way"... that is, in a full-scale storming of his Panjshir lair: gunships, elite troops, napalm, etc. With one mission directive only: "take no prisoner".
I think the two "fake journalists" who were allowed to travel the last mile in helicopter up to Masood's secret den were themselves mere stoolies of the Russians. They carried Belgian passports, claimed their independent agency was located in London, they behaved stand-offishly towards other passengers, and one of them fiddled about with a camcorder, although never in the proper way --to film. My bet is that the camcorder was just a disguised GPS device to allow the Russians to pinpoint Masood...
