It has been many years since I read the NYT, though I do see a fair amount of NYT material in the International Herald Tribune, which has always been a good quick review point for those who want to see what is going on in the world without having to sift through a lot of local and regional news. An example might be this article, which ought to be read by those who are obsessing over Afghanistan as "the enemy":

iht.com

I do not see any major evidence of bias there.

I stopped reading Newsmax, except for laughs, when I read an article there announcing, with much horror, the construction of a "Chinese air and naval base" in the Bahamas. On further investigation the facility in question turned out to be a rather innocuous container port and cruise ship terminal; the only connection to China was that the contractor building the facility was a subsidiary of a publicly held HK firm that a few rather rabid ideologues in the US have occasionally branded, without ever citing any evidence, as a "commercial front for the Chinese military".

You would have to look pretty hard to find distortion at that level in the NYT. I'm sure you could find a left-wing rant website at a level equivalent to Newsmax, but it would probably be one as marginal as Newsmax is. I'm not going to look for it myself; my stomach turns to easily to be mucking around with that sort of thing.
