Doc, I started with 200 shares of UBB and looking at my ending August Fidelity statement I now have 225.9850 shares. During the month I received a dividend of $99.88 which was reinvested at $22.03 per share to give me 4.526 shares of UBB.
I searched around for companies that would allow dividend reinvestment and some said no. Some that say yes for dividend investment really mean only dividend reinvestment in those stocks in companies that run dividend reinvestment programs themselves. For example I hold NOKIA in both Fidelity and in a USAA account. USAA told me flat out that there is no dividend reinvestment possible for NOKIA but I have received 2.420 shares in NOKIA in dividend reinvestment at Fidelity.
Etrade also does dividend reinvestment but you have to specify EACH and every stock you want to have dividends reinvested for. I don't have any Brazils at Etrade so I do not know if it will work for ADRs. However I do have shares of Fresenius Medical (FMS), a German dialysis company, in Etrade and they have reinvested dividends for this company for me.
The dividends seem to be reinvested for no fee except for foreign taxes that are paid for the foreign stocks. I have Chevron and Texaco shares held at Chevron and Texaco and the companies charge a handling fee and a brokerage fee (albeit small, each quarter for reinvestment of dividends.
I hope this isn't more info than you wanted Doc. But when I was looking for brokers, dividend reinvestment was a "deal breaker" for me especially for my "core" holdings".
I do remember getting really ticked off at Fidelity maybe 5 years ago and threatening to move account. I don't remember why I was PO but they transferred me to someone who asked what they could do for me to remain with them. It was a 401k that was rolled into an IRA. I told them I wanted my dividends reinvested and they did it. Back then a few hundred thousand dollars meant something ;>)
Hope this helps. stevek
