Worse things can happen in restaurants. Did you ever read the story that John Train collected in his little book of amazing stories from newspapers? About the couple traveling somewhere in southeast Asia with their toy poodle. They took the dog with them to the restaurant and asked that it fed, but they didn't know enough of the language so they used gestures of eating and pointed to the dog. The staff took the dog away and an hour or so later it was served up to them.

Now that I own a little Sheltie that story doesn't seem as funny to me as it once did.
