My point is, if the company really were committed to Java, and really wanted to make Java a better language or platform that company would write its key applications in Java.

Gerald, that's interesting. Regardless of the Java is slow argument or anything else, if MS Office and all their other products we're available to run on Java, I would dump Win95 and load up OS/2 and run the Java apps right from the OS. Of course Chairman Bill does not want me to dump Win95 or NT so he is going to fight Java to the death! But that's Ok, cause as a consumer I intend to fight back and buy non MSFT products like other office suites etc. And if Java develops to the point where speed is not an issue I will use it! A world with one OS scares the hell outta me! Another reason I like NSCP is the support of multiple platforms, which obviously is something MSFT has no desire to do.
