Brown's season ends

Ace Kevin Brown, who made his last five starts with a torn flexor muscle in his pitching elbow, will undergo surgery on Sept. 27 and miss the rest of the season. Team physician Dr. Frank Jobe, who will perform the operation, said that Brown increased the tear a little during a five-inning stint on Saturday. "The ligament is not damaged," Jobe said Sunday. "By examination, it seems stable." When asked the risk of Brown pitching again without surgery, Jobe replied: "I'm afraid (the ligament) will explode. And then we have real trouble." Jobe said Brown should be able to pitch off the mound next spring. "I don't have words to describe that guy," manager Jim Tracy said of Brown in Monday's Orange County Register. "I also don't have words to tell you how much respect I have for him, as the manager of this team. He's a very special individual."
