"Selling" it and delivering cash to you is easy. They can gin up any number of derivatives based on that gold (as is alledged) -- put options, short futures contracts, etc.

The problem is the flip side: what if you want the actual gold? Then they have to go buy it somewhere. Not a problem at the moment, but if enough people want their physical gold, then we get the derivatives melt-up that GATA et al are always talking about.
