Charlie, I believe GSTRF is now available everywhere except certain locations at sea. They have a system of 48 satellites that covers the entire world. Iridium also covers most of the world and has a deal with the Dept. of Defense to provide services. However, the deal with the Dept. was made because there was no other use for the handsets already purchased by DOD. The Iridium system gives rather poor sound quality, does not provide for data transmission, and has a number of other weaknesses. Globalstar has better voice quality, adequate security, since it is based on CDMA, which is inherently difficult to monitor, and needs only an unblocked line of sight from the handset antenna to the satellite.

Globalstar defaulted on its bonds, so the stock is probably worthless, at least for quite a while. The bond issue, which was trading recently at about 8 cents on the dollar, might come back.
