Just to be a jerk, I'll point out that it was obvious some time ago: techstocks.com

Certainly by the annual meeting this year, Pieper was espousing the 'buy vs. build' philosophy. He expressed concern that licensing technology such as ServerNet exposed them to the risk of losing their edge. Clearly TDM was having difficulty building revenue volume and penetrating new markets.

But think what TDM inside CPQ does: Social Security goes check-free 1/1/98. TDM does 80-90% of ATM transactions. I had assumed that bank branches had become irrelevent and we would use the bank of M$FT. What do you think the Bank of CPQ should look like?

WalMart runs their business on a Himalaya with an Informix data base. Chump change. Who needs Kimberlite Pipes?

Question: what do you think happens to the use of MIPS chips in Himalaya?

If CPQ were to license Rhapsody, would that rattle the GatesKeeper?
Pieper was a UnixKeeper. NT doesn't scale well, but it's neat to think it does.

My advice is: the fun is only beginning. CPQ has bought well, balance sheet is clean, company is clean, yummy UB cash on board.
